Welcome to Birthday Week! This is the week leading up to my baby girl's second birthday on June 5th.
It seems like she was just born and yet it feels like she has always been with us! It is even more strange that it feels like I was just planning her 1st birthday party.
This year, we are haivng her family birthday party on saturday evening and her little friend party on sunday. I am sure that I mentioned that the theme is a Japanese Tea Party! I have been getting things ready for a few weeks now, but I decided I would save my party crafting for one week, begining today with the Birthday Crown.
I began this project by using the template offered in The Creative Family by Amanda Blake Soule. Ofcourse, then I had to tweak it a bit by changing the shape and by cutting the felt into 1/3rds so the colors would alternate. I stitched the top together on the machine, leaving the bottom open so I could emboider an S for Sophia. However, after I did that, I decided that the crown might look better if I emboidered over the top, where I had machine stitched it, with the same color embroidery thread.
I blanket stitched the ribbon on the front, then used an iron on adhesive to attatch the ribbon to the back...attention to detail, much? I blanket stitched the bottom and hand stitched the elastic (complete with cover) across the back.
I loved doing this project! I think the hardest part was deciding what color combinations I was going to use! I really love the idea that this will be something that my baby girl will have and hopefully enjoy for years to come...maybe one day I'll be making one of these for her children? Wow, I am really getting ahead of myself here! In the mean time, I'll keep getting ready for her birthday celebrations and start daydreaming about what colors I will make the birthday crown for her big brother...I'm thinking something with green...

How sweet! My son, Drayke, is turning 1 on June 5th and I'm about halfway through making his birthday crown. His will have a little brown tree on a green background and for each year I'll embroider a different color leaf onto the tree. I might have to steal your covered elastic idea! :) And I LOVE your tag! Did you make it? If not, where did you get it?

Thanks! This has been a fun couple of weeks...kind of feel like the crazy uber crafter...but fun all the same!
I felt kind of strange putting my logo tag on the things I made for my kiddos..."mama loves you" felt much better. So I have my little secret stash of tags...I love using them!
August 1st, Etsy, here I come : )

Your idea for the tree is so sweet! I really like that you'll add to it each year!
I'm all about the covered elastic...such a small thing, but it makes a nice difference!
I ordered the tags through Name Maker, Inc. They are embroidered iron ons (so fabulous!). I only use them for my little ones, so even though they weren't cheap, they last quite a while!
Thanks for poppong by and posting!
