It seems like summer has only just begun and yet here we are with the fourth of July apon us! For those of us that live near the beach, the holidays usually mean an insane amount of traffic, which leaves many of us locals staying close to home. I have been trying to embrace the upcomming holiday, (and not be the scroodge of the fourth of July) in the best way that I know how, through color. Whether it is what we are eating or what we are wearing; red, white and blue can't help but make you feel patriotic!
As I mentioned earlier, after I had made my first yard sale wrap skirt from Heather Ross's book, Weekend Sewing, I was hooked! But as Soule mama had mentioned, she (and I) rarely had the 3+ yards of fabric necessary for the skirt just kicking around the house. I began schemeing and decided to give the skirt a go usung alternating pannels of coordinating fabrics. I cut the pattern a bit more narrow in the width and shorter in the length to accomodate for the way I had folded the fabric to cut it. I was still able to add the 2 extra pannels I needed, added my button hole at the waist band and extended the belt, all with just 3 yards of fabric! Sewing on a budget? Yes, it can be done!! And what do you know, it worked perfectly with my red, white and blue theme, making a perfect skirt for the holiday weekend!
In truth, I am feeling pretty good about the upcomming holiday and plan on making the most of it. The beach, a BBQ and fireworks will surely be on the agenda! I know my son will love the fireworks, I just hope my baby girl is not completely terrified! Spending time with family and friends, eating good (and gorgeous) food and seeing the night sky light up as if by magic is something that should surely be celebrated. I am so thankful for all of these blessings in my life and for the opportunity to share them with the ones I love.
To you and yours, whatever your plans may be for this holiday, may your July 4th be happy and safe!
