When I was pregnant with my son, Tobin, my husband was working alot of late evenings, leaving me at home watching alot of Law and Order episodes. I had not fully tapped into my creative potential at this point, only dabbling in some crafty things when the opportunity presented itself. However, with all of this time on my hands, I went to the one thing I did know how to do fairly well; counted cross stitch. I thought about my grandmother's house and all of the beautiful hand stitched samplers she had framed on the walls. I decided that I would make something that I could embroider my little guy's name and birthday on, having it as a keepsake for years to come. I loved making this for Tobin, and with each stitch, thought about how wonderfully different our life would be when he arrived; what he would be like, look like?
When I found out that Sophia was going to be a girl, I began working on her cross stitch. This time around, it was a little more difficult to find the time to stitch. My husband was no longer working nights, and I had a little 3 year boy keeping me up and busy! It was important to me that she have the same special keepsake that I had made for her brother, but it was also important for me to make the time to daydream about her and how special and wonderful she was and would be in our lives when she arrived. So I did, with each little stitch...
Now here we are with baby #3 comming in just a few months. Not only is this the busiest time of the year for us, but now I have two little ones keeping me up and running around. Knowing with certainty that this will be the baby of the family, I am determined to make the time to bond and daydream as I stitch something special for him. I wanted to wait to begin browsing for a design until I knew what the baby would be, so now I am on the lookout for something special...
This is not something that needs to be done when one is pregnant, but can be done at any time. Perhaps a larger cross stitch with two little one's names on it might be a sweet, framed keepsake in your home? When looking for a pattern, I try pick something that reflects something about our life, or the season. When my son was born, we were living right by the ocean, so the light house seemed the logical choice. So this weekend, I will begin my search. I am thinking about something having to do with the woods? Or maybe a ship that would compliment the light house? I am really looking foward to the upcomming cool fall nights when I can sit on the couch with my little ones and daydream about how I will probably not be able to sit on the couch and stitch much of anything for a few years once there are three little ones running around the house! That actually sounds pretty great.
I'll keep you posted on what I find, and please, let me know if you have decided to begin a cross stitch project of your own! Have a great weekend!
