Thrifting is really cool. Yeah, that was dorky of me to say it that way... but it is pretty cool if you are into finding random items and furniture for your home. Antique stores can also be really fun, but you won't usually be able to pick things up for the same great prices as you would in a thrift shop or at a yard sale. Hey, what about thrifting at home? Let me explain. In my attempt to balance my love of unique things, redecorating rooms, and having a somewhat uncluttered home, I find myself rotating through items, packing them away for another day when something new comes onto the scene.
About two summers ago, we went under a huge construction project. Since we just brough Sophia home from the hosptial, I really needed to be in my own space...so we lived in 2 rooms (and a bathroom) for the entire summer. We had to pack away everything that was not an absolute necessity. When construction was done, we did some unpacking, but being pretty spent from all of the work we did on the house, many of our things stayed packed away. Over the last week while I was home feeling ill, I had John go down into the basement for me to search for some of my favourite maternity clothes and any other random treasures he could come accross.
I have been accused of having a "magic basement" for being lucky enough to dig out items like the one's we found above; a handmade teddybear from Vermont given to our son when he was a baby, great alphabet flashcards (with only 1 missing!), and a wooden dinosaur that was a christmas gift one year...we are still on the hunt for the other two! I think you might be amazed at the magic that might be hidden away in your own attic or basement. Especially old furniture. A few weeks ago, Soule mama (www.soulemama.com) blogged about a great distressed table that she trifted. She was asked a few times about lead testing the paint, yada yada. Since then, I have not been able to stop thinking of how any of our readers could easily repaint a table (lead free) to look distressed, for only the cost of the paint if they had a piece of furniture they could use.
I know I do not have any end tables handy in the basement, so I'll be on the lookout for one to distress myself. I'll gladly share the process once I get going...we can do it together! In the mean time, look around your home with fresh eyes to see if there are any forgotten treasures or items you might want to refinish. You just might amaze yourself!
